Monitoring and inverse modelling of hydrogeochemical processes during managed aquifer recharge in Southwestern Bangladesh

چکیده

Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) has been applied as Storage, Transfer, and Recovery (ASTR) to provide fresh drinking water for local communities at 99 locations in southwest Bangladesh since 2009. Aerobic freshwater from ponds is filtered subsequently infiltrated into anaerobic shallow brackish aquifers. At approximately 45% of these sites, relatively higher levels Fe As were observed recovered water, which requires a better understanding the hydrogeochemical processes that govern Fe, Mn, MAR systems. Therefore, two representative sites with above (74 ± 11 μg/L site GMF11) below (19 6 JJS91), standard 50 weekly monitored on hydrochemical changes Dec 2017 2018. Hydrogeochemical occurring during storage quantified inverse forward geochemical mass balance models developed PHREEQC. The following explained quality: 1) mixing infiltration native groundwater (∼90%:∼10%); 2) consumption O2 by a) dissolved Fe2+ precipitated Fe(OH)3 GMF11 b) sedimentary organic matter (OM) JJS91; 3) reduction SO4 coupled oxidation OM both sites; 4) corrosion freshening induced cation-exchange (Ca sorption; Na desorption) triggering calcite siderite dissolution GMF11. Dissolution carbonate minerals occurred lesser extent JJS91, while cation exchange (Na Ca suggested was displaced because inadequate JJS91. Distinct pH values reflected dominance versus oxidation. Siderite led 4.3 3.1 1.0 0.5 mg/L respectively. Elevated Mn caused max. 20% min. 80% mobilization processes, mainly desorption Fe-oxides Mn-bearing siderite. Recommendations are provided improve quality.

Economics of Managed Aquifer Recharge

Managed aquifer recharge (MAR) technologies can provide a variety of water resources management benefits by increasing the volume of stored water and improving water quality through natural aquifer treatment processes. Implementation of MAR is often hampered by the absence of a clear economic case for the investment to construct and operate the systems. Economic feasibility can be evaluated usi...

Geochemical Triggers of Arsenic Mobilization during Managed Aquifer Recharge.

Mobilization of arsenic and other trace metal contaminants during managed aquifer recharge (MAR) poses a challenge to maintaining local groundwater quality and to ensuring the viability of aquifer storage and recovery techniques. Arsenic release from sediments into solution has occurred during purified recycled water recharge of shallow aquifers within Orange County, CA. Accordingly, we examine...

Spatial and temporal infiltration dynamics during managed aquifer recharge.

Natural groundwater recharge is inherently difficult to quantify and predict, largely because it comprises a series of processes that are spatially distributed and temporally variable. Infiltration ponds used for managed aquifer recharge (MAR) provide an opportunity to quantify recharge processes across multiple scales under semi-controlled conditions. We instrumented a 3-ha MAR infiltration po...

Transport of Silica Colloid through Saturated Porous Media under Different Hydrogeochemical and Hydrodynamic Conditions Considering Managed Aquifer Recharge

Colloids may have an important role in regulating the structure and function of groundwater ecosystems, and may influence the migration of low solubility contaminants in groundwater. There is, however, a degree of uncertainty about how colloids behave under the variable hydrogeochemical and hydrodynamic conditions that occur during managed aquifer recharge. We used an online monitoring system t...

Policy and Economics of Managed Aquifer Recharge and Water Banking

Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) and water banking are of increasing importance to water resources management. MAR can be used to buffer against drought and changing or variable climate, as well as provide water to meet demand growth, by making use of excess surface water supplies and recycled waters. Along with hydrologic and geologic considerations, economic and policy analyses are essential to...
